Message from General Secretary

A Physiatrist or PMR physician is a medical specialist in pain, paralysis, musculoskeletal disorders, rheumatological diseases, diseases of nerve and brain, injury and illness related to disability. Physiatrist approaches to patient with a look at the person as a whole not just the disease or condition. BAPMR is the national medical specialty organization in Bangladesh that represents about 260 Physiatrists nationwide. The association started its journey in 1995 under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Md. Quamrul Islam the father of Physical Medicine in Bangladesh. Since the beginning the association has been sincerely working to raise the awareness regarding the specialty among physicians and general people. Our members are actively participating in scientific meeting at national, regional and international level with exchange of new ideas in the field of Physiatry. BAPMR has been organizing scientific seminars, symposium, workshops and international days related to disability regularly.

Fellowship/Post graduate Courses for Physiatrists:

In Bangladesh, there are 2 formats of Fellowship/Post graduation courses available to become a Physiatrist or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist. These are-

  • FCPS in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • MD  in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

FCPS in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is offered by Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons.

MD in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is offered by Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and Dhaka Medical College. At present, the MD course is fully residential.

Need for Physiatrist:

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) as a specialty has exciting opportunities to contribute to the health and well-being of society. As a specialty it is concerned not only with a specific organ system, but with human performance and function.  This field of Medicine has much to offer in the way of solutions to critical societal issues such as aging of people, saving of individuals with formerly lethal conditions and the increased societal recognition of the importance of quality of life.

Like all other medical specialties, advances in PM&R are dependent upon research. Real challenges are faced by the Physiatrists as it is a relatively new specialty in comparison to other disciplines. PM&R lacks a history of major research involvement and operates within a highly complex theoretical framework. Moreover, rehabilitation science concerns itself with analytic levels ranging from molecular to social, appropriate models for advanced research training differ from those that have been successful in more narrowly defined scientific disciplines.
